There’s never a dull moment in the field. Whether it’s the challenge of solving a coordination issue or competing on who wears the best Floral Friday shirt, there’s always something to keep you on your toes.

MARTIN
Assistant Superintendent

Working primarily in healthcare, Martin is passionate about creating a space that will serve and benefit communities and the complexity and teamwork that bring a project to life.

How did you get into construction?

After high school graduation, I worked full time as an interior framer and hanger with my father for many large hospital projects in Florida, including the HCA Mercy Miami Hospital, a Brasfield & Gorrie job. During this time, I was pursuing my bachelor’s degree by taking night classes full time at Florida International University. When I saw Brasfield & Gorrie at my first career fair at Florida International University, I instantly knew this would be the right choice. At my first career fair, I met a unique team at the Brasfield & Gorrie booth that I wanted to be a part of. This led to my full-time field internship at the 800 Waterford Tower in Miami.

What does your day-to-day look like at work?

My day-to-day is made up of coordinating work with subcontractors, running our self-perform crews, managing site logistics, and working to maintain the overall project schedule. In a nutshell, it is my job to make sure subcontractors have all the information they need and that they complete the work in a timely manner while all the different parts and pieces of a jobsite are moving in the right direction.

What do you like most about your job? What are you passionate about in construction?

There’s never a dull moment in the field. Whether it’s the challenge of solving a coordination issue or competing on who wears the best Floral Friday shirt, there’s always something to keep you on your toes. My passion comes from the complexity of different building designs, different architectural aspects, and the collaboration of a team to bring the buildings to life. Hospital construction holds a special place for me because it is used to benefit and care for others when the job is completed.

How has your career grown since starting at Brasfield & Gorrie?

Since my hiring, I’ve learned operation of site equipment, crane rigging, and different methods of construction from concrete frames, steel frames, tilt-up panels, glazing systems, and precast systems. Most recently I’ve had the opportunity to implement new innovations in prefabrication including overhead/in-wall piping and entire modular bathrooms that arrive ready to install on site. The restyling of these methods takes a little extra planning, which we account for through Lean scheduling, BIM, and wireless infrastructures that allow us to have mobile work stations out in the field.

What is a valuable lesson that you’ve learned during your career?

If you have the opportunity to help and teach others, do it. Make the best decisions you can with the information available, tell the truth, and do what you say you are going to do.
