5 Things to Know about Construction Planning and Scheduling

As the Director of Planning and Scheduling at Brasfield & Gorrie, I am part of a little-known group of professionals who are essential to our ability to plan and execute successful construction projects. When I talk to individuals pursuing careers in the architecture, construction, and engineering industry, most are not aware of planning and scheduling as a career path. Everyone talks about being a project manager, superintendent, or estimator; what some may not know is that exciting career opportunities are available as a planner/scheduler.

To help spread the word about viable career paths in planning and scheduling, we asked members of our team to share what they love about the job.

1. Varied mix of projects. Planners and schedulers get to work on multiple projects at once. A diverse mix of job types makes each day interesting.
2. Data-driven analytics. It’s a great job for self-proclaimed geeks with a love of numbers. Planners and schedulers use computer-based analytics to find solutions to multifaceted scheduling and logistics challenges.
3. Blend of field and office work. Scheduling offers an ideal mix of working in the office and on jobsites. Our planners and schedulers split their time between the office and the field, getting the best of both worlds.
4. Complex problem-solving. Every day can bring a new challenge or an interesting problem to solve.
5. Critical impact. The information planners and schedulers gather, evaluate, and report help drive decisions and complicated logistics that are critical to successful, on-time completions.
