Brasfield & Gorrie Completes Resolute Health Hospital

July 2, 2014

Fast-track completion of $120 million hospital facilitated by BIM, prefabrication, and lean construction practices

Nashville, Tenn. (July 2, 2014) – Brasfield & Gorrie today announced the on-schedule completion of the $120 million Resolute Health Hospital in New Braunfels, Texas.

The four-story, 364,000 sq ft hospital includes 22 emergency department exam rooms, three trauma rooms, four operating rooms, 16 intensive care unit rooms, and 16 neonatal intensive care unit rooms. The facility is also designed for a two-floor vertical expansion.

Located on a 56-acre greenfield site, the hospital is part of a wellness campus that will also feature community centers, green spaces, retail shops, restaurants, fitness center and day spa, all of which promote healthy lifestyles.

“Designed to promote a whole-health approach, this health and wellness destination will bring a new standard of healthcare to the area,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Operations Manager Russell Templin.

Thanks to the use of innovative construction techniques and lean construction methods, this fast-track project was completed on schedule in 22 months despite major changes in scope and 36 days lost due to inclement weather. Building information modeling (BIM) and virtual design and coordination (VDC) were used to confirm scope during the preconstruction process and to coordinate overhead systems during construction, and a wide range of prefabricated components were used to enhance quality and efficiency. The lean scheduling method also contributed significantly to enabling the fast-track construction.

Numerous elements designed to promote sustainability were also incorporated into this project, which is seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification. More than 2.7 million pounds of waste were diverted from the landfill in favor of recycling during the construction process. The facility exceeds the energy efficiency baselines for a standard hospital by nearly 25 percent, which could result in annual savings of more than $448,000. In addition, the new facility will save nearly 2.8 million gallons of water per year, resulting in annual cost savings of nearly $15,000.

Serving as general contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie’s Nashville office partnered with Earl Swensson Associates on this project, which began in June 2012 and was recognized as No. 23 among the Top Project Starts of 2012 by ENR Texas & Louisiana.
