Celebrating Women in Construction Week

March 2, 2015

Women have played key roles in the history of Brasfield & Gorrie, leading some of our most prominent projects and helping shape our corporate initiatives. In honor of Women in Construction Week, we introduce you to one of our most inspiring women leaders: Lisa Capicik.

A regional safety director at Brasfield & Gorrie, Lisa is overseeing safety efforts on the largest project in the company’s history: the construction of the new home of the Atlanta Braves, SunTrust Park. Since joining Brasfield & Gorrie in 2004, the 25-year industry veteran has served as an onsite safety manager; provided safety standards, guidance and training to Brasfield & Gorrie’s employees and subcontractors; facilitated several OSHA partnerships; and risen through the ranks to her current position as regional safety director. She is passionate about improving safety for the construction industry as a whole and seeks opportunities to collaborate with regulatory, research, and trade organizations to establish and disseminate best practices. These efforts have resulted in better safety practices and performance not only for Brasfield & Gorrie but also for our subcontractors and business associates.

In her role leading safety efforts during the construction of SunTrust Park, Lisa manages a team of five safety professionals. Together with the construction team, they have blended the best practices of the joint venture partners that comprise American Builders 2017 to create the highest caliber safety program available to our subcontractor market. To date, they have completed 600 safety orientations and expect to complete more than 6,000 orientations by the end of the project in 2017.

On a project of this size, the safety team confronts unusual challenges on a daily basis. For example, currently, Lisa is helping to coordinate efforts to build seven miles of safety railing within the project structure to provide fall protection for the duration of the project.

In addition to conducting orientations, job hazard analyses, stretch and flex/construction athlete programs and job-wide safety meetings, Lisa oversees project-specific safety plans, conducts safety walks and audits, and helps implement the long-term safety strategy, striving to foster a safety culture that goes beyond rules and regulations.

Womens-Affinity-Group_0007_350X250Inspiring women like Lisa make Brasfield & Gorrie the industry leader it is, and with that in mind, the company recently launched an initiative designed to support women in operational roles in our company. Launched in 2014, the new Operational Women’s Resource Group promotes greater inclusion and success for women in the construction industry by providing a platform to share goals and explore solutions to the unique challenges women encounter in the construction industry.

As we celebrate Women in Construction Week 2015, our hard hats are off to Lisa and the many other women who make our company great.
