Martin Dam Powerhouse Crane Structure Rehabilitation

Tallahassee, Alabama

Client:
Southern Company

At the Martin Dam, the existing 200-ton crane was scheduled to be replaced. However, the existing crane structure was insufficient to support the new crane loads. Our team rehabilitated the existing crane structure in order to install the new crane.

The project consisted of three main components: vertical frames, rivet replacement, and anchor chair stiffeners. The vertical frames worked to keep the existing structure from raking or swaying when the overhead crane was in use. The rivet replacement consisted of individually replacing rivets where the column knee braces connected to the crane support beam with A325 bolts. The anchor chair rehabilitation removed the brick from the column base plates and new stiffener plates were welded in between the anchor rods.

Additionally, we re-grouted each baseplate to account for years of movement that caused the baseplates to uplift.
