Brasfield & Gorrie Completes Master Expansion at Medical City Dallas, Begins New Addition

December 8, 2016

Contractor adds seven floors above existing emergency department and begins project to add Women’s Hospital

DALLAS, Texas (December 8, 2016) – Brasfield & Gorrie recently completed a master-planned vertical expansion project at Medical City Dallas as well as extensive renovations to the hospital. In addition, the company recently began a 161,500 sq ft vertical expansion of Tower D to house Medical City’s new Women’s Hospital.

The recently completed master plan expansion included a seven-story, 206,400 sq ft vertical addition and a 65,200 sq ft interior renovation and was completed in just 27 months.

Working above the existing emergency department, where the hospital admits more than 65 percent of its patients, the construction team added 60 patient rooms and 32 intensive care unit rooms as well as shell space for future growth. The vertical expansion of Building E is pursuing LEED® certification for construction methods used and sustainable features implemented.

Prefabrication of patient room headwalls and the exterior curtain wall system for the vertical addition provided a distinct advantage, ensuring consistent quality and saving valuable time on the schedule. While patient room headwalls were prefabricated on site, the curtain wall system was prefabricated at an off-site facility and delivered to the site for installation, significantly shortening the schedule.

“Our team worked closely with Medical City Dallas to execute the master plan expansion and renovation without compromising their ability to serve the Dallas community,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Senior Project Manager Chris Wall. “We were able to implement measures, ranging from prefabrication to self-performance, to expedite the schedule, saving time and money and allowing Medical City the option to further enhance its facilities.”

Interior renovations upgraded the existing surgery, medical oncology, surgical oncology, stem cell, emergency department and clinical decision unit spaces. Scheduled in phases to accommodate the hospital’s needs, the renovation included 13 operating rooms. Work on these rooms was coordinated to allow for ongoing use of at least four operating rooms throughout construction. All of the surgery renovations were completed immediately adjacent to occupied operating rooms or critical care units.

This fall, the contractor began work on a five-story vertical expansion that will transform the existing Tower D into a new Women’s Hospital when completed in spring 2018.

Serving as general contractor, Brasfield & Gorrie teamed with architect Perkins+Will on both projects.
