Brasfield & Gorrie and Hughes Development Corporation Break Ground on WestLawn at BullStreet

March 30, 2021

Brasfield & Gorrie and Hughes Development Corporation recently celebrated the groundbreaking for WestLawn at BullStreet in Columbia, South Carolina. The five-story office building in the heart of Columbia’s BullStreet District will use cross-laminated timber, making it the first mass timber office building in Columbia and the largest office building of its kind in South Carolina. This material is an environmentally friendly option because it uses a renewable resource.

“We are grateful for our long partnership with Hughes Development Corporation, which began more than 20 years ago. Together, we’ve been able to construct buildings that have created positive momentum in their communities, including the First Base Building, which opened in the BullStreet District in 2016,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Vice President and Division Manager Ben Barfield. “WestLawn’s use of cross-laminated timber is an example of integrating sustainable practices throughout a building’s life, to the benefit of its community.”

WestLawn at BullStreet will include four floors of Class-A office space above a ground floor of retail suites. It will connect to a city parking garage via a covered walkway. The building overlooks the Lawn, the BullStreet District’s shared civic space. The district will occupy 181 acres of previously undeveloped urban land. BullStreet District will offer a mix of residential, retail, restaurant and recreational spaces.

Brasfield & Gorrie is working with architect Perkins&Will on this project, which is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2022.

Brasfield & Gorrie has worked in South Carolina for nearly 40 years and has $709.8 million of projects completed or underway in the Columbia area. The general contractor opened a full-service, brick and mortar office in Greenville in 2013 and has worked on nearly 200 projects in South Carolina.
