Atrium Health leaders recently broke ground to signify the official beginning of construction on the new $450 million care tower on the campus of Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The care tower will include an upgraded emergency department, state-of-the-art operating rooms and enhanced adult intensive care units. In addition, larger and brighter rooms with more natural light and increased privacy, along with new outdoor green space, will help promote wellness and healing and reduce stress on patients, their families and staff.

The general contractor for the project is a joint venture between Brasfield & Gorrie and Frank L. Blum Construction Co. and the architects are HKS and CPL. Hundreds of local construction and design workers are involved in the project.

“The Care Tower illustrates the significant investment Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist is making in the Winston-Salem area,” said Brasfield & Gorrie Regional Vice President and Division Manager Michael Byrd. “Access to healthcare is essential for a community to thrive, and Brasfield & Gorrie is passionate about building strong communities. We’re honored to partner with Blum Construction to bring this vital project to life.”

“For the past 99 years Blum has taken great pride in calling Winston-Salem home and is excited about the investment being made by Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist into the community. This transformational project will enhance the amazing care already provided by a world class institution to our ever-growing population,” said Blum Construction Vice President Mike Powers. “Blum is proud to partner with Brasfield & Gorrie to deliver this state-of-the-art facility which will impact our region for generations to come.”

The care tower project is expected to be fully completed in 2026.
