Patient-centered care is center stage at a new primary care center, BlueHealth Baptist, in Madison, Mississippi. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi and Baptist Memorial Health Care are collaborating on the care center. The center uses a team approach with physicians, wellness coaches, pharmacy staff and care coordinators collaborating to help patients take a proactive approach to their health. Brasfield & Gorrie was the project’s general contractor.

“BlueHealth Baptist is transforming the way healthcare is delivered. It delivers a distinctively different and personalized approach to your health,” said Dr. Lee Greer, Corporate Medical Director, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi. “By considering the bigger picture instead of looking at a single problem, this unique experience improves the ambiguous and complex healthcare challenges we are all used to experiencing.”

The difference in patient experience is noticeable from each visit’s start. An exterior blood draw canopy with four private bays allows patients to park and have bloodwork administered, and a pneumatic tube system connects to the lab to expedite testing services. After arriving, patients don’t wait in a waiting room but instead are escorted directly to exam rooms. On their way out, patients stop by a smoothie bar where they receive a delicious smoothie satisfying their individual needs. Primary care providers examine patients and coordinate telehealth visits with specialists using on-site audio/video equipment. The clinic caters to patients’ holistic well-being, with services such as wellness coaching, post-visit care coordination and onsite wellness activities. A turfed outdoor area provides space for yoga and additional wellness events taught by BlueHealth Baptist Team Members.

The $8.2 million center is a single-story, 14,126 sq ft clinic that includes 16 exam rooms, two phlebotomy rooms, a lab, telehealth rooms, and a lobby with a nutrition bar. Construction also added 198 new parking spaces. The project earned gold honors in the Associated Builders and Contractors Mississippi chapter’s Merit Awards.

“Healthcare affects everyone, and Brasfield & Gorrie is honored to have built a facility that will improve the wellbeing of our community,” said Senior Project Manager Landon McCaskill. “We applaud Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi and Baptist Memorial Health Care for this innovative approach to care.”

Brasfield & Gorrie’s Jackson, Mississippi, office managed the construction project. The general contractor has completed numerous prominent projects in the state, including the Kathy and Joe Sanderson Tower at Children’s of Mississippi and the Jackson Preparatory School junior high renovation. The contractor is ranked No. 3 nationally among top general contracting companies in healthcare construction by Modern Healthcare magazine, based on 2020 revenues.
