Lake Martin Dam Arch Replacement

Lake Martin, Alabama

Client:
Southern Company

Project Size:
Replacement of 20 bays of concrete arches

The project consisted of the replacement of 20 bays of concrete arches on the Lake Martin Dam, which included 3 arches per bay for a total of 60 arches. In addition to the complex arch concrete removal and replacement, the project included removing and replacing the embedded power and gantry crane rail system. The dam’s tainter gates were operated solely by electric gantry crane, so close coordination was required during construction to ensure the gantry had sufficient power and access during flood events to operate the gates. Additional scope included repairing, rubbing, and refinishing the existing downstream-side pier walls supporting the arches. This required a temporary work platform to provide safe access to the downstream side of the dam face, which was approximately 200 feet above river level.
