The University of Alabama Bryant-Denny Stadium South End Zone Expansion

Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Client:
University of Alabama

Project Size:
231,000 sq ft

In 2009, Brasfield & Gorrie was awarded the $50 million expansion project on the south end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium that raised its capacity to more than 101,000 seats. The project enclosed the stadium and was finished in time for the 2010 football season.

The expansion mirrors the north end-zone, with video scoreboards in the corners. Included in the expansion are 8,500 upper-deck seats, 1,700 club seats, 36 luxury suites, an upper concourse with restrooms, Crimson Tide Foundation offices, a Donors Hall of Fame and an outdoor market on street level for food and merchandise. It increased seating for UA students and renovated the existing lower bowl at the south Endzone.

Brasfield & Gorrie self-performed more than 30% of the work through the construction of the concrete structure (23,000-cy, valued at approximately $12M), sitework improvements, and erection of 400 structural precast, upper deck seating units. Much of the concrete work is exposed to view with a high-level finish. Furthermore, Brasfield & Gorrie self-performed many of the interior general trades and managed construction of a complex exterior skin and curtainwall system at the South elevation.

The South Endzone Expansion project provided many challenges and complexities of which the Brasfield & Gorrie team was able to overcome within the allotted 16-month schedule.

Furthermore, the concrete frame was constructed during football season where the general public accessed the stadium on game days through several points within the construction site.
