St. David’s Middle School is a three-story, 34,000 sq ft educational facility in the heart of a residential neighborhood in Raleigh, North Carolina. It includes 18 classrooms, four science labs, a library, and a new quarter-acre amphitheater and courtyard adjacent to the new building. This phased project began with the construction of the new structural steel building, which was scheduled and erected during the school’s summer vacation. Demolition of an adjacent building took place during the second phase and made room for construction of the new courtyard. All construction and demolition work was completed on an active campus within 30 feet of the existing buildings. The tight site had no laydown space and required coordinated efforts to schedule deliveries around the school’s peak hours. Additionally, temporary pathways were used throughout to maintain a safe and operational environment for students and visitors.
