Mission Hospital Cancer Center Earns National Honors

July 17, 2012

Asheville, N.C.— Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC, partnered with Mission Hospital to help its cancer center earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold certification, making the facility one of only three cancer centers in the nation to attain that level of certification according to the United States Green Building Council’s website. In addition, the Mission Hospital Cancer Center is the largest LEED-certified healthcare facility in North Carolina.

Though the facility was originally slated to obtain LEED Silver status, Brasfield & Gorrie incorporated a variety of environmentally sustainable practices and elements to help elevate the facility to the Gold level. These include installation of fixtures that will result in a 30 percent water use reduction, diversion of 75 percent of construction waste management from disposal, and use of low-emitting adhesives, paints, and carpet systems. Using sustainable practices and implementing eco-friendly features helped the hospital earn 42 points on the LEED for New Construction checklist.

Brasfield & Gorrie built the 116,778 sq ft, five-story cancer center along with the three-level, 348-space parking deck. This $38.3 million project began in February 2010 and was completed in October 2011.

The project team also included TRO Jung/Brannen as the architect.
