Stephen C. O’Connell Center

Gainesville, Florida

Client:
University of Florida

Project Size:
220,000 sq ft

Recognition:

ABC Excellence in Construction Eagle Award
ABC Excellence in Construction Project of the Year

This 220,000 sq ft renovation stripped the existing arena to its bones, replacing everything, including the extensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. With strategic design and the amenity improvements intended to provide patrons with a dramatic new experience, the renovation updated the seating bowl and added premium seating areas, a state-of-the-art, center-hung scoreboard, and a state-of-the-art audio/visual system. The project also included upgrades to team spaces and an enhanced concourse to improve the fan experience. The lobby was expanded by 13,000 sq ft and includes high-span structural steel framing that transitions to the existing fabric roof system.

Along with the difficulties that come with renovating a 36-year-old building on a tight schedule, the project team was challenged to work with virtually no laydown room and only one entrance for equipment and supplies. But with strong teamwork, a constant effort to maintain coordination schedules, the use of advanced technology, and extensive virtual design and construction (VDC) services, the project was completed successfully in only 14 months.
