Located in Midtown Atlanta, the 113,774 sq ft Emory Proton Therapy Center is the first proton therapy treatment facility in Georgia. Considered the world’s most advanced radiation treatment for cancer patients, proton therapy uses a controlled beam of protons to precisely target cancerous and non-cancerous tumors. This freestanding facility houses five treatment rooms, including four rotational gantries and one fixed-beam room, and has the capacity to treat approximately 1,775 cancer patients with cutting-edge proton beam technology each year. The Center’s structural design includes mass concrete elements up to 10 feet thick to provide radiation shielding between the treatment system and the building’s occupants. Installation tolerances for the proton equipment required placement of the mass concrete elements within one-hundredth of an inch of the design parameters. Brasfield & Gorrie completed this demanding structural undertaking with our own forces, and no remedial work was required to accommodate installation of the proton equipment.
