Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite Laboratory Expansion

Atlanta, Georgia

Client:
Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta

Project Size:
11,170 sq ft

The Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Scottish Rite Laboratory project was a three-phase, 11,173 sq ft expansion. Due to the demand for diagnostic medicine testing, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta set out to design a new lab space that streamlined the testing process while reducing labor time and cost. Using Lean principles in the design and construction, the project provided a renovated layout that was designed as an open environment with movable furniture. To achieve this versatility, Brasfield & Gorrie built 8- by 8-inch poles throughout the lab, each with a dedicated power or data feed, allowing the technicians to freely configure their testing space and maximize efficiency.

Phase I of the project consisted of a one-story, 6,708 sq ft vertical addition over the existing dietary building. The addition included a staff lounge and locker room, pathology department, lab administrative offices, and miscellaneous offices. Phases II and III included renovation of 4,465 sq ft of existing lab space that had to remain in operation during construction. Phase II of the lab expansion project consisted of a new core lab, including serology, urinalysis, bone marrow processing, hematology, and coagulation. Phase III concentrated on workspace for the new advanced diagnostics department and included a conference room, offices, and a research processing area.
